One of the original members of the Skatalites, Don Drummond was Jamaica’s leading trombonist, and described at the time by the great Jazz singer Sarah Vaughn as one of the top 5 musicians in the world. The well-documented and tragic story of the end of his life was a result of mental problems for which he was already receiving treatment at the Bellevue Mental Asylum in Kingston by the beginning of the 60s. The tracks “Reload” and “That Man is Back” released under Coxsone were recorded in celebration of his discharge from hospital. Similarly the tracks on this killer Ska double-sider entitled “Bellevue Special” and “No More” were also recorded following a stint in hospital. The heartbreakingly melancholic, agonizing, and almost terrifying atmosphere which pervades this performance seems to foretell of the tragic murder of his wife and subsequent incarceration in Bellevue, which was the bitterly sad ending to Don’s life story. Both the a and b sides were recorded with the same instrumental backing, although strictly speaking they are actually two different takes. As early as 1964 Jamaica’s first producer was already laying the foundations for the version culture to come.

Just some of the gems compiled on this album include the Mighty Vikings’ killer Ska instrumentals “Up & Down” and “Ska 65”, Rico and Johnny Moore’s early shuffle instrumental “Omara Special” and Lord Brynner’s Kaiso numbers “Lock and Key” and “Yvonne” − all of which have never previously been reissued on either vinyl or CD. Other classics among the 18 tracks that make up this CD include Laurel Aitken’s “Boogie Rock” and Lord Tanamo’s “Mood for Ska”, as well as tracks by Roy Panton and Orville Alphonso.

-GLEN BROWN MEETS KING TUBBY 15 DUBS FROM LOST TAPES-

DBCD-018

A collection of previously unreleased outtakes of versions from b-sides to 7 and 12 inch releases on the Pantomime, South East and Dwyer labels - labels on which Glen Brown put out some of his most highly acclaimed work - by artists such as Sylford Walker and Big Youth. Glen Brown carved out a place for himself with his unique style, putting him up there alongside the likes of Lee Perry, Dub Organizer and Augustus Pablo. The works featured on this CD are also among some of the first on which King Tubby was credited as an artist. A lowly studio engineer at the time, King Tubby was already beginning to go beyond just experimenting with the tape effects and spring reverb of the day, trying every means possible to create what would become his own distinctive sound. The sessions reproduced on this CD represent a joyous and significant discovery of "lost" music, which sees the likes of King Tubby and Family Man come together in a creative collaboration with this singularly talented producer, who originally started his career as a jazz singer.

The second in the Sonia Pottinger series is a compilation of rare 45s released on the SEP and Gay Feet labels by the legendary female producer, who was responsible for so many wonderful releases during the 60s and 70s and who stands tall alongside the likes of Studio One and Treasure Isle. This is a precious selection of tunes, most of which have never seen reissue since their original release on 7 inch in 1967 and 68. Starting with title track and killer instrumental, Orange Street Special, the collection features Johnny & the Attractions' deeper than deep classic, Let's Get Together, Rudies Give Up by Lloyd "Cuss Cuss" Robinson and Pantomime producer Glen Brown, and Miss Cushie by Junior Murvin of Police and Thieves-fame singing under his former name, Junior Soul. 15 tracks of Rock Steady murder from the era when Orange Street was sill called Music Street and Rudies ruled the town!

Rock A Shacka Vol.17
Alton Ellis [ Soul Train Is Coming ]

DBCD-017

Originally conceived as a commemorative album, sadly this wonderful collection of self-produced works became a tribute for Alton Ellis, who passed away on 11th October 2008 after a battle with cancer. Alton was a godfather of legendary status who laid the foundations for Jamaican singer song-writers. Starting with releases from the 60s, this album is an awesome showcase of Alton's lesser-known but prodigious talents as a record producer. Following his massive hits at Studio One and Treasure Isle, Alton, aka Mr Rock Steady, decided to go it alone and set up his own label "Ellis". Sadly, due to various pressures put on him by the major labels, he was only able to release a few singles, before having to draw a close to this wonderful period of production. As such, these tunes make up a collection of rarities which have until now been very difficult to come by - 19 tracks in all, they represent some of the best of Alton's Rock Steady and Early Reggae output. Rock Steady track no. 1 features Alton, his sister Hortense Ellis and Starlites trumpet player Johnny Moore - who passed away shortly before Alton - while other tracks feature backing from the Upsetters, as well as rhythms recorded by the Sound Dimensions at Studio One. Includes a detailed commentary by Mandingo.
