[ Cast Your Faith To The Wind / I'm The Greatest ] Tommy MCccook / Frank Cosmo
Rock A Shacka, LTD 7" (Ska) (DBPB-14)

Order

Kicking off with a beautiful and striking piano intro by Gladdy Anderson, this is a scorching Ska version of an instrumental jazz tune, featuring the Buster All Stars in full flow, led by bandmaster Tommy McCook and backed by Drumbago’s simple but driving drumbeat. The evening I first heard this tune, I couldn’t get the intro out of my head all night.

On the UK Blue Beat pressing, Monty Morris is incorrectly credited as the artist on I am the Greatest. But it is actually Frank Cosmo who features on this up-tempo Ska number with its impressive opening trumpet fanfare and Buster’s proclamation that, “I am the Greatest!” Frank Cosmo was active during the Ska era and recorded numerous tracks for Buster and Beverley’s, but I don’t know of any Rock Steady recordings by him.

Rock A Shacka, LTD 7" (Reggae) (DBPB-16)

Order

Most likely released around 1971, this cover of Beginning of the End is a rare and wonderful excursion by Buster into funk, complete with funky-ass bassline. This is a boss tune guaranteed to have the floor jumping from the moment the needle drops.

The b-side features a tune covered by numerous singers, including Delroy Wilson, but this is possibly the first recording of it by a Jamaican artist. Buster’s sweet, gentle vocals are complimented beautifully by the harmony of the backing singers, which include Slim Smith (who would of course go on to make his own cut of this tune for Bunny Lee). Buster’s version is a superb cover of the Impressions’ classic track, recorded during the period when Rock Steady was evolving into Reggae.

It is possible that the late great Coxsone Dodd had personal reasons for doing so, but despite the legendary status of this tune among Ska connoisseurs, Freedom Sound has never once seen release on 7 inch – until now. The players and tune itself hardly need any introduction, except to say that even among the Skatalite’s enormous output, there are very few tracks that feature performances with quite the same awesome power. The lack of trombone melody suggests that this might have been recorded during one of Don Drummond’s stints at Bellevue mental asylum. Despite his absence, however, this is a Ska instrumental that is rivaled by few others. The flip side is a lovely up tempo Ska tune from Norma Fraser, who is best known for her hit version of the First Cut is the Deepest, also recorded for Coxsone Dodd.

(Black Originator/Rock A Shacka) OUT NOW !!

Originally released in 1983, “One More River” is a killer steppers Roots Rock tune cut to quite an unusual riddim track. Although it was recorded at a time when Dancehall was fast becoming the mainstream, General Plough’s unique, nasal high-tone vocal delivery, the striking flute accompaniment and the Eastern-flavor melody combine to produce a result that exemplifies Roots Reggae at its very best. Never previously reissued, it has acquired something of a legendary status among the most dedicated collectors. Thirty years on, first-time listeners will not fail to be struck by the inexplicable strangeness that pervades this rare gem of a tune.

"Slaving" is the second tune Lloyd Parks released as a solo artist, but the rhythm track has been used countless times on such classics as Glen Brown's "No More Slaving", Sylford Walker's "Chant Down Babylon", Dillinger's "Working Day", Big Youth's "Hot Cross Bun", I-Roy's "Black Man Time" and Delano Tucker's "Build Our Country". This is an absolute killer roots number that grabs the listener from the very start with a wicked organ intro. Parks' striking and mournful vocal delivery conveys all the pain and sufferation of a life of poverty. Despite the obvious quality of this record, for some reason it has never been rereleased on vinyl until now. (This is not a limited edition reissue. A few years after the Ska era, during which he had been one of Duke Reid’s top singers, and around the time he made his first big hits for Sonia Pottinger singing together with Patsy on tracks like “Your Photograph” and “Down the Train Line”, Stranger Cole started a label with Delroy Wilson, who was himself Coxone’s poster-boy singer at the time. Taking the first initial of their respective surnames, they named the label W&C, and put together an awesome band built around Hux Brown − a guitarist whose skills matched those of the mighty Lyn Taitt − and Gladstone Anderson on vocals and piano, and recorded a few singles to their backing. The label was short-lived, but all of the tracks they recorded were pure gold, including the massive tunes “I Wanna Love You” and “Once Upon a Time”, beloved of so many reggae singers. This release features 2 songs from this label that are highly sought after and regarded among collectors, and which were only ever pressed in Jamaica. Stranger and Gladdy’s melancholic melodies and harmonies on these tunes represent the absolute pinnacle of Rocksteady music.

Why do Japanese people love Patsy? Maybe it’s her melancholy, her twilight charisma, or those heart-rending melodies. With her beautiful looks and a vocal delivery that overflows with emotion, Patsy is a female artist the likes of which I have never known. While she was already a star in the Ska era as a partner with Stranger Cole and Derrick Morgan, it wasn’t until Miss Pottinger took her under her wing that she started to make more frequent appearances as a solo singer. This was nothing do with her quality as an artist, but probably more to do with the fact that the male producers in the male-dominated culture of Jamaica at the time didn’t give her the chance she deserved. As a woman, Miss Pottinger, the only female producer the island has ever known, was really able to understand Patsy − an understanding that gave rise to so many wonderful hits from the Pottinger stable, such as “You Took My Love” and “Love so Divine”. This release features a Gay Feet-style lovers Rocksteady track on the A-side, and a funky reworking on the B-side of “Blues in the Night”, originally composed for the 1941 film of the same name.

Curtis Mayfield had huge influence on many of the young Jamaican artists of the 60s, including the Wailers and Slim Smith. This is clear just from the sheer number of covers and remakes of his tunes that came out during this era. Glen Brown and Trevor Shields provide the backing harmonies to Joe White's exquisite high tones on this superb Rock Steady cut to the massive hit ballad Curtis Mayfield recorded with the Impressions during the ABC Paramount era. Although the record was originally credited to just Joe White, it's fair to say that the high quality of the release is a result of the team effort of all three singing as the Graduates. Released in April 1968, the tune was also released in the UK on the Blue Cat label. The coupling is the same as the original release and features Karl Bryan on an instrumental version of the Graduates' "Way of Life" on the b side.

These were the days of the dance clash, where guns, rachette knives and violence were a normal part of the proceedings. Lloyd Robinson's killer Rock Steady track, released a year before his best known hit "Cuss Cuss", is a song of a sad era where everyone suffered as a result of Rudies and their increasingly wild behavior. His mournful vocals accompanied by the crying of a harmonica perfectly capture the dark and disconsolate mood that continues to this day in some parts of urban Jamaica. That only the deepest collectors even knew of the existence of this tune is due to the fact that no more than a few hundred copies were pressed and the record was only ever released in Jamaica. The same coupling as the original pressing, "Mrs Apple Pie" on the b side features an impressive guitar riff in the intro.

No More Don Drummond
One of the original members of the Skatalites, Don Drummond was Jamaica's leading trombonist, and described at the time by the great Jazz singer Sarah Vaughn as one of the top 5 musicians in the world. The well-documented and tragic story of the end of his life was a result of mental problems for which he was already receiving treatment at the Bellevue Mental Asylum in Kingston by the beginning of the 60s. The tracks "Reload" and "That Man is Back" released under Coxsone were recorded in celebration of his discharge from hospital. Similarly the tracks on this killer Ska double-sider entitled "Bellevue Special" and "No More" were also recorded following a stint in hospital. The heartbreakingly melancholic, agonizing, and almost terrifying atmosphere which pervades this performance seems to foretell of the tragic murder of his wife and subsequent incarceration in Bellevue, which was the bitterly sad ending to Don's life story. Both the a and b sides were recorded with the same instrumental backing, although strictly speaking they are actually two different takes. As early as 1964 Jamaica's first producer was already laying the foundations for the version culture to come.

Lord Creator Come Down 68

A big star in the Jamaican music scene from the early to mid 60s, Lord Creator was imprisoned for 18 months for possession of a small amount of cannabis (although the fact that he was a Trinidadian most likely had something to do with the excessive severity of the sentence). After release from prison, Creator got right back in the game, recording "Such is Life" at Randy's studio, which he had written while incarcerated. For some reason, however, this Rock Steady gem, which features a superb performance from Tommy McCook, was only released in very small numbers as a pre-release. The master tapes and stamper have since disappeared and until now the record had been accorded something of a mythical status. The same coupling as the pre-release, the b side features Lord Creator singing about his time in prison with a lovers twist that makes an interesting contrast to Toots Hibbert's more defiant treatment of the same theme in "54-46, That's My Number", released the same year.

Released at the end of 1965, "Thunderball" was the 4th James Bond movie in the by-then hugely popular series to take the island by storm. Set in Nassau, Bahamas, the plot centers around SPECTRE's nefarious dealings in diamonds and atom bombs and Bond's attempts to thwart them. In Bobby Aitken's hands these elements are cooked up into a fierce, minor tone Ska instrumental with a blood-curdling, edgy harmonica solo. Previously only ever released on a UK pressing in 1966, this is a much-anticipated limited edition repressing from the Rock A Shacka label.

"Orange Street Special" is performed by Bobby Aitken & the Carib Beats, who were famous for backing some of Slim Smith and Ken Parker's sweetest Rock Steady tunes produced by Bunny Lee. Most people know of the legendary duo Stranger & Gladdy from their big hit "Just Like a River", which came out on Joe Gibbs' Amalgamated label in 1968, but the pair had already released a few tracks together under the name of the Seraphines on Pottinger's Gay Feet label a couple of years prior to that. Every Seraphines track ever recorded is an absolute killer and "We Shall Overcome" - an anthemic, mid tempo Ska track - is certainly no exception. The Hippy Boys, led by the Barrett brothers (the cornerstone of the Wailers band), have acquired something of a cult status. It is said that this band temporarily became the Upsetters band for a 1969 tour of the UK that the original Upsetters band were unable to attend. "Seven Heaven" is a very fine instrumental Ska / Rock Steady cross-over, and is almost certainly the first tune that was released under the name of The Hippy Boys.

[ Don't Want To Be Hurt ]
Stranger & Patsy

Over the Ska and Rock Steady era Patsy recorded a large number of duets with some of the biggest names in 60s Jamaican music, but it is arguable that none were topped by the tracks recorded with Stranger Cole, and of those, that this one of the finest releases of the lot. On "My Photograph" Stranger's smoky vocal style and Patsy's beautifully clear delivery seem to combine in perfect counter point to one another, culminating with the spine-tingling close harmonies of the final chorus. "Don't Want to Be Hurt" is an achingly soulful number which showcases the natural chemistry that these two singers shared. Stanger and Patsy take it in turns to deliver lines in a call and answer pattern that creates the distinct impression you are listening in on an intimate conversation shared between two deeply unhappy lovers. Previously unavailable on any format other than the original 60s pressing, Rock A Schacka once again rescues a piece of Jamaican musical history from the depths of the archive.
